1) Use meaningful filenames based on keywords. If your customer is looking for training, search engines give more weight to something like [http://www.name.com/training.html] than a page URL using the name [http://www.name.com/lccours1.html].

 2) Embed meaningful HTML titles based on keywords. A travel site named "San FrancisGo" offering discount fares to San Francisco would do well if they used the following words in their title:

 San Francisco Discount Travel, Flights, Accommodations & Tours

 3) Embed meaningful META descriptions based on keywords. Some search engines give weight to and/or display the META description as your summary. Be aware that some only display the first 250 characters or the first 20 words. A site offering commercial real estate in Chicago will increase their site traffic if they used the following META description tag:

 META name="description" content="Focusing on Chicago commercial real estate, you can buy or sell Chicago commercial property with ease. Whether it be commercial buildings, acreage, or zoned lots, yourname offers instant access to Chicago real estate backed by professional Chicago realtors. From work or home, you can view the best values in office buildings, residential income properties, industrial complexes, commercial acreage and more. Specializing in Chicago investment property, commercial sales, industrial sales, leasing, Chicago property management, prime business lots and acreage and commercial ranch properties. Yourname helps you in every aspect of buying, selling, finding or listing Chicago commercial real estate."

 4) Embed META keyword tags wisely. Know that some search engines use this tag to index a site. Limit repetition of keywords to seven or less. The same Chicago commercial real estate firm would do well if they used the following META keyword tag:

 META name="keywords" content="Chicago, chicago, Real Estate, real estate, Commercial, commercial, Chicago Investment Property, chicago investment property, Income Properties, income properties, Industrial Complexes, industrial complexes, Office Buildings, office buildings, Industrial Sales, industrial sales, Chicago Property Management, chicago property management, Commercial Ranch Properties, commercial ranch properties, Chicago Commercial Lots, commercial lots, Real Estate Acreage, real estate acreage, Buy, buy, Sell, sell, List, list, Agents, agents"

 5) Be aware that some search engines display the first bit of text from your page as your site description. If the first item on the Chicago commercial real estate site is a building, the IMG tag should be used to convey even more information:

 6) Embed metatags in every important page and submit these page URLS to search engines. Repeat steps 1 thru 5, but edit your tags to correspond with the content of the page. Capitalize on the same critical keywords, but rearrange the meaning and the way you deliver the message.

 7) When in doubt, do research. Visit the most popular search engines and search for yourself the way others would. View the source code of the Top 3. (If you use Netscape, click the View menu and select Document Source.) Therein, the key. Using the principles outlined above, you can factor this knowledge into creating better HTML filenames, titles, metatags, image text, and initial page wording.
